Spectronika Copper Vapor Laser Applications

Copper vapour lasers (CVLs) produce high repetition rate, nanosecond pulse-light (quasi-continuous) generation in remarkably bright green and yellow colours and a good beam quality. The specific performance parameters of the Spectronika CVL determine some of its possible applications:

High Speed Imaging:
High Speed Photography High speed imaging is used for observing and exploring fast moving objects and fast developing processes, such as combustion, spray, turbulent flows, etc. The imaging systems use strobing techniques and incorporate high repetition rate lasers in combination with high speed imaging cameras to allow the recording of a sequence of fast following images. After studying the recorded image sequence in slow motion, it is possible to visualize and explore processes and patterns, undetectable before.
The short pulsed CVL, synchronized to the camera, is suitable to enhance the camera performance by illuminating the object and eliminating the image blur even for very fast moving objects.
The combination of a high speed imaging system with the Particle Image Velocimetry method, yields a powerful instrumentation for determination flow parameters over time and for obtaining pictures of flow turbulence. By targeting the pulsed CVL beam at different parts of the flow it is possible to measure the velocity in any flow area and to create a complete map of vorticities.
Laser imaging is also suitable for observation through bright areas and flames and for recording details of important processes, which would otherwise be totally obscured by the ambient bright light. In this application the CVL is appropriate for short pulse illumination of the object under study with a bright narrowband light and a digital high speed camera could be filtered to accept only the picture of laser light illumination while rejecting the broadband ambient emission (plasmas, arcs, flames, explosions).

Medical Applications:
The applications of CVL in dermatology are based on the positive effect of the absorption of a controlled, short pulse light radiation of specific wavelength on different skin diseases. The green light (511 nm) absorption in melanin, is successfully used for therapy of pigmented lesions and stains. The yellow light (578 nm) oxigenoglobin absorption is more effective for vascular lesions treatment. The effect of the combined green-yellow light is useful for the treatment of keratoses, adenomas, apitheliomas and some other skin defects.
In oncology, the photodynamic therapy, based on the effect of simultaneous photochemical reaction between an appropriate sensitizer, laser light and oxygen, is used for a selective destruction of pathological tissues.
Laser Skin Treatment
No side-effects of the laser treatment have been documented in the medical literature. It is tolerated well by patients and does not have interaction with medicines.

Laser Pump:
The green-yellow lasing with average power of several watts is a quite effective pump for dye-lasers, emitting strong radiation in the red, thus expanding the useful spectrum of the CVL and its possible applications.
The CVL lasers can also be used with nonlinear crystals for frequency doubled applications where short pulses of higher frequency light is needed.

Laser Marking:
Laser marking The CVL beam quality, depending on the power of radiation, allows the implementation of different micromachining operations: precise cutting, drilling, scribing, etc. with a resolution in the micron range. The relatively low energy emission level of the CVL is sufficient for laser marking on different material surfaces, but restricted only to a shallow depths. Using appropriate equipment for precise two-dimensional scanning of the beam, one can mark any pattern, code and identification sign for classifying parts and details, for making distinguishing signs, logos and advertising goods and to create any other visual information on a desired surface. CVL lasers are particularly useful for marking non-ferrous metals which are often difficult to mark using other types of lasers.

Light and Image Show (Entertainment):
There are a number of light effects obtained by scanning and deflecting beam techniques using appropriate optics and programmable optical devices.  Spectronika offers a line of laser projectors and complete systems to suit the needs of many laser show applications.
The projection of a laser beam, modulated by different source signals (TV, video, computer generated images, etc.), utilizing two-dimensional light modulators (optical transparencies), gives the opportunity to project images on a variety of large screens and surfaces.
